Quick tip for today:

Buy white lace/trim and use your paint and Glimmer mists to creat your own custom colored trim to match your project! Many retailers are now selling white ribbons and trims precisely for this reason, and it has made for easy embellishing on several of my projects. For example -

the Halloween card I made for World Cardmaking Day - I needed a gray/black lace but all I had was white, so I used my Black Magic Glimmer Mist by Tattered Angels and after a few quick sprays, I had the perfect shade with a shimmer of glimmer. Hope you'll find this tip useful!

Technique Tuesday Halloween Project

Howdy Divas! It's been awhile since I've been blogging, but it's good to be back and I'm excited to share with you some projects I've been working on in preparation for my favorite holiday and season, Halloween and fall. My first project are these paper covered blocks, which I've wanted to make forever, and finally made them a priority. Before I get to the step-by-step, here's how they they turned out:

Here's what you need to make your own:

• unfinished wooden blocks (mine are 3 1/2" blocks purchased from Michaels)


• spray paint in your colors of choice (I used black & white, flat finish)


• hand sander or sand paper


• patterned paper


• stickers


• mod podge
  
  
  Step 1: spray paint all sides of each block w/ black spray paint. Let dry & spray another coat.

Step 2: Cover the black spray paint w/ white paint, again 2 coats of white spray paint.

Step 3: Use an electric hand sander (could probably use sand paper too) to sand the outer edges & faces of the blocks until the black shows through the white as much/as little as you like.

Step 4: Cut your patterned paper squares a tad bit smaller than your actual block.

Step 5: Brush Mod Podge across the block face and glue paper down.

Step 6: Embellish with stickers!

That's it! Easy peasy and project one of my "13 Days of Halloween" event on my blog The Magic of Ordinary Days beginning Oct. 1st!

Cookin' and Cookbookin': Good Eats!

Tired of not being able to find a discount coupon for your favorite pizza place?

Is your "junk" drawer in the kitchen too full of coupons and flyers? Then make a handy dandy notebook with inside pockets!

I used a spiral bound, a little larger than 5x7, to hold all my various dining out menus and options.

First, I gathered some paper scraps and my stand-by Jillibean journaling sprouts and pea pods.

Next, I measured and cut my cover papers to fit, and embellished. I kept things simple and flat so that it would it into my kitchen drawer and REMOVE CLUTTER!

Now, all my menus are trimmed down and folded in half to it in this one notebook, not spread out and tumbling out of the back of the drawer.

Try this! It will help you declutter and simplify.

  My name is Vanessa and I love being on the DT here!  I am married to the love of my life, Dana.  Together we have seven kids from 4 to 22, a daughter in law, a future son in law, and a brand new grandson!  I am a stay at home mom and I have and continue to homeschool all of our kiddos.  Life is crazy and amazing!
